Children would like more advice about online privacy

More than half (54 per cent) of 11-16 year olds say young people need more advice about online privacy, new Ofcom research reveals this week.

22% want more information on how to avoid inappropriate content online, and a similar number (20%) want more advice on how to deal with cyberbullying. And while almost three quarters of 7-16 year olds say they have received some information about staying safe online, 23% say no-one has talked to them about online safety.

Over a quarter (28%) also believe that information is needed on how to keep security information such as passwords and PIN numbers safe.

Four out of five parents that use parental control software don`t turn it on

Most parents ignore parental controls for kids despite being concerned about their children’s online safety.

52 percent of parents admitted they never changed the security settings on their parental controls software, McAfee research revealed. The research highlighted that just under half of parents claim to monitor their children’s online activities, however 30 percent said they left their children alone in their bedroom to surf the web.

When it comes to maintaining the family PC, the task tends to fall to dads, with 88 percent of men saying they were responsible for installing and monitoring security software on their home PC.

51% of kids surf the web unsupervised

More than half of teens frequently surf the web without any supervision, according to a study from MSN. The research into the online habits of 20,000 14-19 years olds in Europe also revealed that 29 percent of teenage web users admitted they had been bullied online.
Over 50 percent of teens surf without any parental control.

Almost all teens play games and gaming is often a social experience for them

Fully 97% of teens ages 12-17 play computer, web, portable, or console games. Additionally:

* 50% of teens played games “yesterday.”
* 86% of teens play on a console like the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii.
* 73% play games on a desktop or a laptop computer.
* 60% use a portable gaming device like a Sony PlayStation Portable, a Nintendo DS, or a Game Boy.
* 48% use a cell phone or handheld organizer to play games.

For most teens, gaming is a social activity and a major component of their overall social experience. Teens play games in a variety of ways, including with others in person, with others online, and by themselves.

* 65% of game-playing teens play with other people who are in the room with them.
* 27% play games with people who they connect with through the internet.
* 82% play games alone, although 71% of this group also plays with others.

And nearly 3 in 5 teens (59%) of teens play games in multiple ways—with others in the same room, with others online, or alone.

* 42% of teens who play games in multiple ways say they play most often with others in the same room.
* 42% of teens who play games in multiple ways most often play alone.
* 15% of teens who play games in multiple ways play most often with those they are connected to via the internet.

Tip of the day: YouTube`s Safety Center

Use YouTube`s Safety Center if you notice any hateful content or any other teen safety issues on YouTube`s channels/videos.

And remember: Children under 13 years are not permitted to access YouTube. Also, teach your kid to think about the potential consequences when posting videos of himself or a friend. Once a video is online, you`ll never know who might see it.
