Most parents ignore parental controls for kids despite being concerned about their children’s online safety.
52 percent of parents admitted they never changed the security settings on their parental controls software, McAfee research revealed. The research highlighted that just under half of parents claim to monitor their children’s online activities, however 30 percent said they left their children alone in their bedroom to surf the web.
When it comes to maintaining the family PC, the task tends to fall to dads, with 88 percent of men saying they were responsible for installing and monitoring security software on their home PC.

More than half of teens frequently surf the web without any supervision, according to a study from MSN. The research into the online habits of 20,000 14-19 years olds in Europe also revealed that 29 percent of teenage web users admitted they had been bullied online.
Over 50 percent of teens surf without any parental control.

Fully 97% of teens ages 12-17 play computer, web, portable, or console games. Additionally:
* 50% of teens played games “yesterday.”
* 86% of teens play on a console like the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii.
* 73% play games on a desktop or a laptop computer.
* 60% use a portable gaming device like a Sony PlayStation Portable, a Nintendo DS, or a Game Boy.
* 48% use a cell phone or handheld organizer to play games.
For most teens, gaming is a social activity and a major component of their overall social experience. Teens play games in a variety of ways, including with others in person, with others online, and by themselves.
* 65% of game-playing teens play with other people who are in the room with them.
* 27% play games with people who they connect with through the internet.
* 82% play games alone, although 71% of this group also plays with others.
And nearly 3 in 5 teens (59%) of teens play games in multiple ways—with others in the same room, with others online, or alone.
* 42% of teens who play games in multiple ways say they play most often with others in the same room.
* 42% of teens who play games in multiple ways most often play alone.
* 15% of teens who play games in multiple ways play most often with those they are connected to via the internet.

A surprising number of teenagers — nearly 15 percent — think they’re going to die young, leading many to drug use, suicide attempts and other unsafe behavior, new research suggests.
The researchers analyzed data from a nationally representative survey of kids in grades 7 to 12 who were interviewed three times between 1995 and 2002. Of 20,594 teens interviewed in the first round, 14.7 percent said they thought they had a good chance of dying before age 35. Subsequent interviews found these fatalistic kids engaged in more risky behavior than more optimistic kids.
The study suggests some kids overestimate their risks for harm; however, it also provides evidence that some kids may have good reason for being fatalistic.
Native Americans, blacks and low-income teens — kids who are disproportionately exposed to violence and hardship — were much more likely than whites to believe they’d die young.
